Community Radio in Edinburgh

Since 2004 it has been possible for community radio stations to be set up under licence from Ofcom. These stations are set up on FM or AM. Black Diamond FM has been in existence in Midlothian since 2007 which is when most stations became licenses for the first time.

Community radio must involve their local communities, often becoming quite a focus point in the community, and they tend to focus on a smaller number of listeners than their commercial counterparts.

The stations are allowed to include some advertising and sponsorship up to around 50% of the running costs. The other half must come from other grants such as local authority or Big Lottery funding. It is also possible for individuals to contribute to the Scottish Community Broadcasting Network which oversees all the community radio stations.
