Maroon Mile project gathers momentum

Plans have been lodged to site interpretation panels on the Maroon Mile initiative which is part of the 150^th anniversary celebrations for Heart of Midlothian Football Club.

The panels are set for North Merchiston Cemetery and one will detail the notable people buried there including sculptors, surgeons, artists, writers plus players and staff of the football club.

The other will look at the biodiversity and wildlife which can be found in the cemetery.

Another panel will be at Dalry Cemetery and the other at the former New Tivoli Cinema in Gorgie Road.

Funding for the initiative comes from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the project being put promoted by the club and The Foundation of Hearts.

The trail, which will explain the history of the Gorgie and Dalry area, will start from the war memorial at Haymarket which will be restored. The roll of honour includes Hearts players who enlisted for McCrae’s Battalion.

Workshops have already been held with local organisations including Good Morning Gorgie and Tynecastle High School as well as Gorgie and Dalry Community Forum as the plans take shape.
