And it all went dark at Edinburgh Castle…

It is nearly Halloween so you could have been forgiven for thinking there was something more sinister afoot at Edinburgh Castle on Wednesday evening when the lights went out.

But it was part of planned repairs by Historic Environment Scotland. The Castle lost mains power for an estimated two to three hours yesterday evening.

It was the first time in five years that the building which is so much a part of the skyline has gone dark, as the Castle is usually floodlit. The last time power was shut off to the castle was in 2019, when electrical LV feeder pillars were installed on-site.

This time, the power will be temporarily shut off to allow essential repairs to the high voltage cable trays and brackets. The trays and brackets have corroded, in part due to the increased temperature and humidity experienced in Edinburgh as part of climate change.

Photographer, Craig Duncan, was ready with his drone to capture the moment.
