Mixed fortunes for Fife but Stars go down to Clan

Fife Flyers beat Dundee Stars 4-1 in the Challenge Cup at Kirkcaldy on Saturday but were beaten by the same scoreline at Guildford Flames in the Elite League on Sunday after being level at the end of the second session.

The home side took the points with three goals in 14, third-period minutes.

Earlier, Flames took the lead through Ryan Tait after 16 minutes but they had suffered a scare when Fife had the puck in the net after four minutes only for the score to be chalked off after a challenge by Guildford’s coach who claimed there had been interference by Flyers’ goaltender, Shane Owen.

The visitors kept plugging away and it was Michael Cichy who found a way through after 29 minutes, a chance set up by Lucas Chiodo and Maxim Musorov, to level at 1-1.

Flames edged ahead 14 minutes later when Jake Coughler netted and they moved 3-1 ahead when Jack Jacome scored five minutes later.

As the clock ticked down, Fife head coach, Tom Coolen, withdrew netminder Owen (pictured) to give them six skaters after a timeout, but the move backfired when Guildford four the net for the fourth time 11 seconds later when  Ethan Strang netted unassisted.

The 1,667 crowd at the Guildford Spectrum saw their favourites outshoot the Scots 35-24 and Fife make the long bus trip home pointless after their third straight defeat in the league.

At Dundee, Stars suffered a second defeat of the weekend, going down 5-4 to Glasgow Clan in the Challenge Cup watched by 1,352 fans.

It was 1-1 at the end of the first but Clan won the middle session 2-0 before losing the final period 3-2. Jake Elmer claimed a double for the home side and Liam Finlay scored twice for the Braehead combine.
