General Election 2024 – Alan Gordon Melville – Reform UK Edinburgh North and Leith

Alan Melville is the Reform UK candidate for Edinburgh North and Leith. He says he is a committed libertarian who regards the lockdowns as “economically illiterate and socially devastating”.

He holds Masters’ degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science and has taught in both schools and universities.

The Edinburgh Reporter met Mr Melville at the Picardy Place tram stop, and although he confirmed that he uses the tram frequently, he believes it causes more congestion on the streets.

He said that Reform is now his political home although he previously stood as a UKIP candidate. Admitting freely that he does not expect the Reform Party to get 150 MPs he said that if they gain about a dozen or so this time then they hope to pick up more in five years’ time.

But he also accuses the other parties of all being much the same. He said: “You can hardly put a cigarette paper between the Liberal Democrats and the Tories and the Labour Party. They’re all pretty much the same. The only difference between the SNP and the Greens and the other three parties is that the SNP the Greens want to secede from the union.”
