Government reshuffle

The resignation of Michael Matheson MSP as Health Secretary, albeit overdue, and the resignation earlier in the week of Elena Whitham, the Drugs and Alcohol Policy Minister, on health grounds meant that First Minister, Humza Yousaf, was forced into a reshuffle on Thursday.

New positions include Neil Gray MSP as Health Secretary, Mairi McAllan as Net Zero and Economy in a new combined role, Fiona Hyslop will become a member of the Cabinet as Cabinet Secretary for Transport, and Christina McKelvie MSP is the new Drugs and Alcohol Minister. Kaukab Stewart will take over as International Development Minister and Jim Fairlie will support in Transport and Mairi Gougeon in Agriculture.

The Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body is now conducting an inquiry into the £11,000 bill for roaming charges for Mr Matheson’s iPad which had been presented by him as part of his expenses. The parliament initially paid the bill but Mr Matheson eventually reimbursed the charge apparently run up by his children using the iPad as a hot spot to watch football.

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said that Mr Matheson has misled the public, the press and parliament but said that the First Minister “should have sacked him the minute it became clear that Michael Matheson had not told the truth”.
