Gary Naysmith adds experienced striker to his Edinburgh City squad

Edinburgh City have confirmed the loan signing of experienced striker Darren Smith from East Kilbride.

Smith began his career with Motherwell, before spells with Ross County, Stirling Albion and Stenhousemuir before re-joining the Binos in 2014.

During his second spell at Forthbank that he arguably enjoyed the most successful stage of his career to date, scoring 54 goals in 121 appearances.

At the end of season 2017/18 he received recognition for his excellent performances by receiving the PFA Scotland League 2 Play of the Season award.

In May 2019 he joined Clyde, spending a season with the Bully Wee in League 1, before joining for Lowland League East Kilbride in the summer of 2020.

He has also represented Scotland at under 19s, 20s and 21s level.

Manager Gary Naysmith was happy to begin  putting his stamp on the squad and he had this to say to ECFC TV on the signing:

“Darren was someone who first caught my eye whilst playing for Stirling Albion against my East Fife side. Since then I have followed his career closely and when I found out that he was available on loan, we moved quickly to try and get a deal done.

“He has a lot of experience in league one and league two and he also played at a high level in the early part of his career at Both Motherwell and Ross County.

“When we started talking to Darren, it was clear to see that he was keen to join Edinburgh City and that is always pleasing for a manager to see about any potential signings. Not only will he add pace to our attack, but he will compliment the other strikers that we have at the club and I am looking forward to working with him.”

Smith told ECFC TV: “I am delighted to be joining Edinburgh City on loan. I am grateful for the opportunity and hope I can help the club finish as strongly as possible this season.”
