Governed by George Heriot’s Trust, a Scottish charity, George Heriot’s school encourages applications to the Heriot’s Foundation, which provides full fee remission to the children of widows and widowers living in Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife, the Scottish Borders and Central Scotland.

Open to students from Primary 6 onwards, ‘foundation’ pupils receive funding and emotional and pastoral support.

Created by founder George Heriot, the Foundation has provided access to free independent education to over 5,500 children who have lost a parent over the years.

In addition to the Foundation, George Heriot’s offers means-tested bursaries, with the amount awarded towards fees decided on a case-by-case basis.

Open to students from Primary 6 upwards, the school promotes bursaries through outreach to schools, and via its website and social media.

School Principal, Lesley Franklin

School Principal, Lesley Franklin, said: “Removing barriers to independent education is a priority for us, which is why we are proud to offer a variety of fee assistance, including the Heriot’s Foundation. George Heriot’s is a school for children from any background to thrive and achieve in their education.

“Many might not be aware of the support and opportunities available for them at George Heriot’s, and I fully encourage any child who qualifies for the Foundation or one of our other bursaries, to apply.”

With more than 1,600 students, George Heriots is ranked as Scotland’s best performing school by Higher exam results and includes actor Ken Stott, portrait artist Henry Raeburn and journalist, TV presenter and author Gavin Esler amongst its notable alumni.
