Police called to break up ‘number’ of parties at Pollock Halls of Residence

Police were called to break up a number of parties at the Pollock Halls of Residence, the University of Edinburgh’s main halls of residence last night.

No arrests were made and no fines were issued but officers dispersed a number of individuals inside the accommodation.

The buildings hold around 1,900 students.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had previously told students that they were not allowed to go to parties, public houses or restaurants following a wave of coronavirus outbreaks across the country.

Inspector David Hughes told BBC Scotland: “Police Scotland attended and we’ve spoken to a number of the parties and dispersed those individuals. [Officers] provided education and advice as to what is and what isn’t in line with current regulations.

“From a police perspective, we’ve been relatively well received there. We have had some people who were unhappy with the regulations – but more the laws that are in force currently rather than the police response.”

He also said that a number of the ‘parties’ involved five to seven students who were clearly not from the same household.
