ELREC launch fundraising appeal to help with food poverty

Foysol Choudhury MBE, the Chair of Edinburgh & Lothians Regional Equality Council ELREC) has told us of the appeal which the charity has just launched.

They have set up a Go Fund Me appeal to raise £5,000 to help them continue their work in the Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) community in Edinburgh. This began in June when ELREC realised there was a demand for food parcels, and set about trying to address the need. Since then, with some local funding they have managed to provide and deliver around 30 food parcels each week.

The work is volunteer led and the food parcels have been delivered to any families who are unable to collect them from ELREC’s offices in Forth Street. There are around 15 volunteers involved, working in partnership with Edinburgh Community Food and Fareshare who provide free food parcels.

But ELREC do not have the resources to provide halal meat to those receiving food parcels, and they do not have sufficient funding to top up the parcels with meat which appears to be the main item they are asked for, and which other food banks cannot provide for them.

If you can, then please donate at the link below.

Mr Choudhury said: “Please donate what you can and help us keep doing this important work for our community.”
