The Bike Station’s Hero Bike Fundraiser
Throughout the pandemic The Bike Station’s Hero Bikes programme has helped key workers to get to work safely by providing them with a free bike plus helmet, lock and lights.
The Heroes say that cycling has not only helped them with their commute, but also to manage the mental strain of the crisis.
Hero Bikes gives key workers a refurbished bike to get to and from work. It has already helped many key workers but demand has far outstripped their resources. While mechanics have been working flat out to refurbish bikes, they need the public’s support to provide bikes to as many key workers as possible.
Financial support will help them get more key workers in both Edinburgh and Perth on the road.
A spokesperson said: “The public have already been simply amazing in donating bikes and this fundraiser will enable us to continue refurbishing bikes and providing essential accessories. We know that Hero Bikes are making a real difference to key workers’ lives.”
Your funds will enable a key worker to receive the following:
- £5 – local map
- £10 – bike lights
- £20 – sturdy lock
- £50 – helmet
- £150 – road-ready bike
- £200 – refurbished bike and accessories.
Ella, a Logistics Coordinator for a catering social enterprise said: “I love how quickly I can get around now, and not having to worry about public transport. It feels safe.”
Francisca, a Customer Service Assistant, said “Hero Bikes have helped me a lot in my normal day, making my life much easier. Now I spend less time travelling to work so this gives me the chance to rest a little more or to have time to myself. I am very thankful!”
The Bike Station is Edinburgh and Perth’s foremost bicycle recycling and cycling promotion charity. They repair unwanted bikes and put them back on the road. They provide cycle training, bike maintenance training, and refurbished bikes to promote cycling as a healthy and sustainable means of transport across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Perth and Kinross and beyond. They work to support cyclists to start and keep cycling, working on location and at the Bike Station, and help other organisations promote cycling and bike maintenance skills.
