Former Hibs’ CIS League Cup winner Steven Whittaker has joined Dunfermline Athletic on a one-year deal as player/coach.

The Edinburgh born full-back is a product of Hutchison Vale Boys Club. He joined Hibs in 2000 and was part of the golden generation of youngsters including Derek Riordan, Gary O’Connor, Scott Brown, Steven Thomson and Steven Fletcher who all represented Scotland and earned big money moves from Easter Road.

During his first spell at Hibs made 174 appearances in all competitions before Rangers paid £2m for him in August 2007.

During his five years at Rangers Steven played 209 times, scoring 28 goals. He won three SPL titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups, and also helped Rangers to the final of the UEFA Cup in Manchester, beating Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina en route.

He played in midfield for Walter Smith`s side in the final, but Dick Advocat`s Zenit St Petersburg proved too strong in a 2-0 victory.

He later moved to Norwich City and played for the club in the English Premiership before returning to Hibs under Neil Lennon.
