Jason Cummings’ double denies Liverpool FA Cup victory

Former Hibs’ Scottish Cup winning striker Jason Cummings
scored twice for Shrewsbury Town against World Champions Liverpool in the FA
Cup this afternoon.

Cummings left Hibs for an undisclosed fee to join Nottingham
Forest two years ago but failed to make the desired impact at the City Ground.

After a loan spell with Rangers, he joined the Shrews last
year and has now written his name into the history of the club.

Liverpool looked to be heading for an easy victory despite
fielding a weakened team.

Curtis Jones opened the scoring in the 15^th minute then the Reds doubled their advantage via an own goal by Donald Love in the opening minute of the second half.

It took Cummings just five minutes to score his first after coming on as a substitute on the hour mark when he slotted home from the penalty spot after Josh Laurent was brought down by Yasser Larouci.

He then grabbed a second in the 75th minute after gaining
possession on the edge of the Liverpool box and beating two defenders before rifling
the ball into the net.

Speaking on BBC after the match Cummings said: “I could
have got the hat-trick but two goals off the bench was a dream come true
against the best team in the world.

“We’ll take the replay and go to Anfield – it’s what
the FA Cup is all about. I’m delighted for the boys because we deserved it and
we worked hard for it. My fitness isn’t fully there so I was expecting to be on
the bench.”

When Cummings learned that BBC pundit Ian Wright had tipped him
to come on and score in the second half he responded: “Ian Wright knows
his stuff. I called every week when he was on I’m A Celebrity to get him on.”
