Men’s hockey – Watsonians progress in Scottish Cup without playing

Men’s Premiership: Clydesdale 0, Grange 3; Dundee Wanderers 4, Edinburgh University 5; Uddingston 4, Grove Menzieshill 3; Watsonians 3, Hillhead 4; Western 7, Kelburne 2.

Men’s Premiership side Watsonians moved into the next round of the Scottish men’s hockey Cup without going onto the pitch.

Stepps, who are eighth in Division Two, sent a text to the Edinburgh side saying they could not raise a team for the match scheduled for Tipperlin in Edinburgh at lunch-time on Sunday.

Tom Swarbrick, one of Watsonians senior players, said: “The text came in late on Saturday night and I only saw it once I woke up on Sunday morning.”

Watsonians are eighth in the Premiership and Swarbrick added: “It’s disappointing as we wanted to play.”

Grange are second in the men’s Premiership, a point behind Western Wildcats, after a 3-0 victory at Clydesdale.

Josh Macrae scored two goals and Dan Coultas one in a tight game.

Early pace-setters Grove Menzieshill suffered a shock defeat at Uddingston.

The Lanarkshire side edged the Dundee combine 4-3 while Edinburgh University won 5-4 at newly-promoted Dundee Wanderers.

Watsonians coach Mike Leonard warned his under-strength side that Hillhead would be tough opposition.

And so it proved as the Glasgow outfit edged the home side 4-3 to move off the bottom of the table.
