REVIEW – Collapsible : Woman on the edge in award-winning performance ★★★★
THE packed audience at Assembly Roxy had clearly come on word of mouth about Breffni Holohan’s mesmeric performance as Essie, whose world (job, girlfriend) is slowly collapsing around her.
The play, almost totally performed as a monologue is performed on a plinth. We are never sure who has put Essie on this pedestal/edifice or is it ledge that she is about to jump off?
With very taut direction by Thomas Martin of a Margaret Perry play, we are taken into Essie’e world, which is clearly troubled.
The play begins with Essie railing against the internet. This is a woman where the world knows her place but she is finding difficulty finding her place in this world.
At times, Essie appears to be asking others to describe and/or define her. In many ways, this felt more like an eighties yuppie parable than a 21st century tale.
Breffni Holahan is magnificent throughout as she brings the audience with her, closer and closer to the edge. This was both a physical and emotional performance of great skill.
Having said all that, we found the ending somewhat underwhelming but don’t let put you off. In many ways we would implore you to go to Assembly Roxy and see an outstanding performance and production.
A five star performance from Breffni Holahan.
Collapsible is at Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh, until 25 August,
