What’s on at the cinema in July
Coming soon to a cinema near you are a bundle of box office blockbusters.
Flying into cinemas on 5 July 2019 is the second solo Spider-Man film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man: Far From Home with Tom Holland (The Impossible) reprising his role for the fifth time, after also appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
He is joined in this feature by newcomer to the franchise Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) and regular Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction). Two years ago Spider-Man: Homecoming made $880 million at the worldwide box office so expect this film to draw similar results.
For the third time this year, Disney will release the latest live action remake of their animated back catalogue when The Lion King roars onto the silver screen on 19 July 2019. A quarter century ago, The Lion King animated film won two Oscars, two Golden Globes, critical and audience acclaim and secured over $960 million globally to become the highest grossing film of the year.
Will this feature cross the hallowed $1 billion threshold? Well, after directing The Jungle Book live action extravaganza three years ago that also pulled in over $960 million, Jon Favreau (Elf) returns to helm this mighty ship. We can only hope.
Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) directs his ninth film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which opens on 26 July 2019 with Brad Pitt (Twelve Monkeys), Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic) and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya). Need I say more?
