The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) has partnered with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Edinburgh International Festival to support the Soundmoves project encouraging wider participation in classical and orchestral music in Wester Hailes.
During the festival there was a a special performance by pupils from Sighthill, Clovenstone and Canal View Primary Schools at The Hub of their own films.
Running since 2017, the Soundmoves project has enabled pupils and teachers from Sighthill, Clovenstone and Canal View Primary Schools to take part in a series of creative workshops exploring music and movement. Composer Matilda Brown, movement specialist Ana Almeida and SCO musicians were joined by videographer Sandy Butler with two classes from each school who filmed their work in the theatre at Wester Hailes Secondary School. The resulting six short movies are based on original ideas developed during those workshops.
Kirsteen Davidson Kelly, SCO Creative Learning Director said: “Our Soundmoves project forms part of the SCO’s Wester Hailes Residency and was designed to introduce primary pupils to music and movement – and to enhance life skills such as teamwork, communication, focus and confidence. The classes who have worked with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra team to co-create this series of short films have delighted and surprised us with their creativity and artistry and we are really excited to present the results of this exceptional project on screen, with accompanying live music and movement, at a special event on Friday 21 June.”

The SCO has been running Soundmoves workshops at Clovenstone, Sighthill and Canal View Primary Schools since Autumn 2017. The Soundmoves project forms part of the SCO’s Wester Hailes Residency and is the first time the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Edinburgh International Festival have collaborated together in this way.
