City Council flies the flag for Edinburgh Pride

This weekend The City of Edinburgh Council is flying the flag for Pride Edinburgh from the roof of its City Chambers.

The blue and pink trans inclusion flag – which the Council flew from the first time earlier this year – has been raised above the High Street alongside the Pride rainbow flag in support of Saturday’s Pride Scotia march.

Pride Edinburgh is Scotland’s National LGBTI Festival and this year celebrates 22 years since Pride began in Scotland with a parade and a community-festival celebrating diversity.

Council Leader, Adam McVey, said: “On Saturday, Edinburgh’s PRIDE Scotia takes place, marching for full equality for LGBT+ communities at home and around the world. 50 years on from the Stonewall riots, which were the starting point for the Pride movement, it feels more pertinent than ever to demonstrate our city’s support.

“The theme for this year’s event is ‘#thisisme’. Well, this #thisisedinburgh and we will fly our flags with Pride this weekend to stand with everyone taking part.”

On Monday, the Council’s Depute Leader joined Enterprise Car Club to mark Scotland’s LGBT+ Festival. Councillor Day took to the seat of a specially-wrapped Enterprise Car Club vehicle, featuring the famous Pride colours stretched right over the car’s roof and both the doors.

Commenting, Councillor Day said: “We are proud to be a LGBT+ friendly Council and welcome all members of society to the Capital. By flying the flag at the City Chambers – and on the city’s streets as the Enterprise cars take flight – we are wholeheartedly letting it be known that in Edinburgh, we are proud of our city and our people.”

Look out too for traffic lights in Edinburgh along the route of the parade in support of LGBT+ diversity. Siemens Mobility has replaced a series of green traffic signals along the Pride parade route with a range of diversity images.
