Two new partners have been appointed at Gilson Gray in Edinburgh and six at Brodies LLP across their Scottish offices.

At Gilson Gray Sally Nash has been promoted to Partner within the Family Law team while John Fulton has been made Partner within the firm’s Real Estate department.

Philippa Cunniff and Sally Nash

Both joined Gilson Gray on the same day two years ago and their promotions reflect the continued growth and success of their respective teams and the increasingly influential role they play within them.

Sally has worked exclusively in the field of family law since qualifying as a solicitor in 2004. In a recent Chambers UK Guide, she was described as ‘doing a quality of work that Partners elsewhere can’t reach.’

Sally said: “I’m so proud to work for such a forward thinking and ambitious firm.

“In addition to having a clear focus on making a real difference for our clients, it is refreshing to be part of a culture in which the development and wellbeing of staff is at the forefront.

“There are exciting things on the horizon as we continue in our aim to become the best family law team in Scotland.

“The promotion to Partner will be a subtle change to my role here but it’s a challenge I can’t wait to meet head on”.

Sally is dual qualified in both English and Scots Law and is a member of the Family Law Association.

She is also accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in family law.

Gilson Gray’s rapid rise to become one of the country’s most prominent law firms has been based on cherry picking and harnessing the skills of the top legal talent in Scotland.

John said: “I am delighted to part of such a driven and entrepreneurial firm that recognises, creates and promotes opportunities for its clients.

“It’s also great to be part of an organisation which places such significance on the health and wellbeing of all of its people.

“It is an exciting time to be part of the firm as it continues its journey to become the best law firm in Scotland.”

Philippa Cunniff, Partner, Head of Family Law at Gilson Gray, said: “Sally is a brilliant member of our team and this is a very well-deserved promotion.

“Our aim is to become the best family law team in Scotland and retaining top talent like Sally is vital to achieving this goal.

“At Gilson Gray we believe in offering enthusiasm and a genuine warmth when dealing with our clients and this is something Sally embodies.

“It’s an exciting juncture for our team and we’re excited about the strides we’re set to take in the near future and the role Sally will play in this.”

Murray Stewart, Partner, Head of Real Estate at Gilson Gray said: “John is a valued member of our team and clients really appreciate his pragmatism, straight talking and commercially focused advice.

“His promotion is fully deserved and I look forward to working with John for many years to come as both the real estate team and indeed the firm continues to go from strength to strength.”

Gilson Gray was the largest full service law firm launch in Scottish legal history in 2014 when it opened simultaneously in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Brodies six new partners

Brodies LLP, Scotland’s largest law firm, unveils six new partners as a result of its latest round of promotions, and reports a 6% growth in people in the last 12 months.

In Edinburgh Lucy McCann and Chris Duff become partners in litigation and Graeme Leith is assumed as partner in real estate.

These latest appointments come as Brodies records a 6% increase in people, up from 645 the previous year to 688, including 102 partners.

Brodies’ managing partner, Nick Scott, said: “Our new partners have each demonstrated exemplary levels of commitment to our clients and colleagues, and that is recognised today. I look forward to supporting them in their new roles as they continue to develop their careers here at Brodies.

“In our strategic plans we remain committed to bringing the sharpest minds together. That fusing of multiple viewpoints is what delivers value to our clients and encourages us to collaborate, innovate and think differently.  That we have today assumed six of our colleagues as partners, and in April appointed Aberdeen-based partners Elaine Farquharson-Black and Bryan Wilson, is testament to that focus, the resilience of our clients and the trust they place in us to help them achieve their ambitions.”

In addition to the partner promotions and new appointments, Brodies has confirmed that 23 senior solicitors have been promoted to associate. The firm has also retained 11 of its trainees as newly qualified lawyers and recruitment is ongoing to appoint a further 22 to join the firm in autumn.

“In the last year, we have grown the size of our team by 6% and our clients will continue to benefit from our ability to attract leading experts in their fields,” continues Scott. “The ongoing growth of our firm is about making sure that we are in the best position to provide opportunities for all of our colleagues to grow in their careers.  By investing in our team and recruiting excellent people, we seek to ensure that Brodies remains an outstanding place for our lawyers to give, and our clients to receive, top quality legal advice. I wish all of our new recruits and colleagues receiving promotion all the best in their new roles.”
