Sculpture uses lager cans and wet wipes to send a message
Artist Annie Lord has transformed river waste into an artwork to serve as a reminder of the impact rubbish has on rivers.
The artist used items like Tennent’s cans and wet wipes to create a piece encased in resin and it is hoped that it will encourage visitors to think twice when it comes to dealing with rubbish.
The art work is the culmination of RiverRubbish which included a series of volunteer and public events.
The project was based at the Almondell and Calderwood Country Park near Mid Calder which the River Almond runs through.
A team of volunteers from local angling groups and the Friends of the Country Park collected 1,384 items from 100 meters of river bank.
The majority of collected items were wet wipes and sanitary products which people had mistakenly thought were flushable.
The artist said: “Like many people I was completely unaware of the extent to which rivers are being filled with wet wipes and other rubbish. Seeing the volume collected in such a small area brought the message home.”
