East Lothian for family living
East Lothian is a great place for a family to live. Claire Flynn of Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre explains why…
Choice of properties
Many East Lothian towns have a great selection of homes suited to a family, with multiple bedrooms and often with their own private gardens. Plus, while it is a highly desirable area for families, prices for family homes are generally a bit lower in many of the East Lothian towns in comparison to the capital.
ESPC data indicates that between November 2018 and January 2019, the average price of a three bedroom house in East Lothian was £235,113 compared to £312,190 in Edinburgh.
Easy access to the outdoors
Whether you choose to live in a coastal town like North Berwick or Dunbar or would prefer to be nestled amongst rolling countryside in the likes of Haddington, there is no doubt that the towns and villages of East Lothian offer great access to the outdoors. Whether it’s a bike ride to the beach or a walk in the hills and countryside, it’s a great place to live if you want your family to spend their time outdoors.
Family-friendly activities
The towns of East Lothian offer a great range of family-friendly activities. Dunbar is home to Scotland’s first wake park, Foxlake, which as well as wakeboarding, offers Ringo rides, a zip line obstacle course over water and Segway tours. Dunbar is also home to East Links Family Park, which features animal enclosures, train rides, go-karts, bouncy castle and trampolines, making it perfect for a family day out.
Archerfield Walled Garden is another fantastic place for family activities, with a range of amazing trails, including a Willow Walk and a magical Fairy Trail. Plus, don’t forget about the museum of flight in East Fortune, which offers a host of aviation-themed activities for the whole family.
Great schools
East Lothian is home to number of highly renowned state schools and Loretto, a private school, is also located in Musselburgh. There are many private schools in Edinburgh, which are easily accessible from many of the towns in East Lothian.
Excellent transport links
Commuting from many of the East Lothian towns to Edinburgh is a breeze, making it an ideal place to live if you work in Edinburgh. There is a regular and fast rail service from Waverley out to several of the towns, including Musselburgh, Prestonpans, Longniddry, North Berwick and Dunbar.
