Former First Minister Alex Salmond arrested

It is understood that former First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond was arrested and charged last night but was not detained in custody.

It is not yet clear what charges he faces and he is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff court later today where more details will become available.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm a 64-year-old man has been arrested and charged and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Mr Salmond has consistently denied that he was guilty of any criminal behaviour.
