Firefighters tackle blaze in East Lothian


Around 40 firefighters are in attendance at a landfill site in East Lothian.


Emergency services were called at at 2.36am this morning where 300 tonnes of waste was found to be alight at the Viridor site.


The SFRS issued a statement which said: “Around 40 firefighters are currently at work tackling a large fire in East Lothian.


“SFRS mobilised a number of resources to the scene after the alarm was raised at 2.36am this morning.


“A large plume of smoke will be visible from a distance.”


A spokesperson for Viridor said: “A fire was reported at Viridor’s Dunbar Landfill site early this morning (Tuesday, 22 January).


“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service currently has six fire crews on site dealing with the fire in a building where waste arriving on site is stored before it is landfilled.


“No one has been injured and there is no risk to public health. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has been notified.


“The site remains closed to allow the fire service to complete its work.


“Viridor confirms that the separate energy recovery facility at Dunbar is unaffected.”
