SP Energy announce start of next phase on Queensferry Road

SP Energy Networks began the second phase of work in the vicinity of Queensferry Road on Friday 12th October at 18.00 as already planned.

This is part of a major £7.5 million electricity network upgrade for Edinburgh.

Following detailed planning and discussions with The City of Edinburgh Council, the work has been scheduled to coincide with the October school holiday, which typically sees a reduction in daily commuter traffic on the roads.

All work is scheduled to be fully completed on 21 October 2018, and will include multiple working locations on Quality Street, Queensferry Road, Clermiston Road North and Clermiston Avenue.  Traffic management measures will be in place for the duration of the project, with work areas and diversionary routes well signposted. Again these measures are approved by the council.

The project is required to upgrade existing infrastructure which has served the west of Edinburgh for decades.

SP Energy say that installing new cables will ensure thousands of people living nearby will continue to experience a reliable and secure electricity supply. Investments like this are also critical to enable the electricity grid to be prepared for future developments, such as an increase in electric vehicles and their chargers, as the company aims to deliver a better future, quicker.

Craig Arthur, Distribution Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “This project is part of a major multi-million pound investment in Edinburgh’s electricity network. It is designed to boost the security of electricity supplies for thousands of homes and businesses for decades to come, and to support a smarter network of the future.

“Due to the level of work involved, the project has always been planned over two phases. We have been working closely with Edinburgh City Council for a long time to ensure that we can keep disruption for road users to a minimum. Our engineers and technicians will be working as hard as they can to complete the project as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience experienced while the work is being carried out.”

This matter was discussed at the recent North West Locality meeting when a very good narrative on the roadworks in the summer was included in a report to the meeting, and the steps which the council has agreed to ensure that there is not a repeat of the delays.  The report is shown below.
