Men’s hockey – Grange claim magnificent seven
Division One (men): Grange 7, Grove Menzieshill 3 (at Fettes College)
Division One title hopefuls Grove Menzieshill moved into a 3-0 lead thanks to a double from Albert Rowling and a single from Paul Martin against champions Grange after 27 minutes.
The Tayside team looked to be consolidating their place at the top of the ten-strong table with victory over one of their Division One title rivals.
But Frank Ryan netted for Grange after 32 minutes and the goal sparked a remarkable revival.
Grange then fired in six unanswered goals to run out 7-3 winners with hard-working Todd Mills securing the go-ahead goal a minute into the second period.
Duncan Riddell, Jacob Tweedie, Callum Milne, Dylan Bean and Robbie Shepherdson all netting before the final whistle which must have come as a welcome relief to Grove’s Edinburgh-based coach Neil Allan.
He said: “I did not think there were three goals in the game when we were 3-0 up but they had a strong second-half and showed why they are the champions and we defended poorly.
“We put this behind us and move on but the league is not won in the first four games of the season and everybody will drop points in this league.”
Grange’s team manager, Ed Irvine, said that Grove had started strongly and it looked as if Grange were going to produce an action replay of Saturday’s disappointing display in a 3-3 home draw with Uddingston at the same venue 24-hours earlier.
He added: “We got going in the second-half.” They certainly did.
