Lib Dem MP for Edinburgh West, Christine Jardine, has warned constituents to be careful of scam calls, claiming to be from HMRC.
Bogus callers have been advising constituents that they are due sums of unpaid tax and trying to collect payment over the phone.
Scammers will usually advise that victims have arrest warrants, outstanding debts or unpaid taxes in their name.
Ms Jardine said: “I have had a number of constituents contact me about the HMRC scam. Though I am glad that they have not been caught out, I am worried that others may fall foul of these threatening and fraudulent calls.
“I have written to Police Scotland asking them to take action against these fraudsters and help protect the vulnerable people that they target.
“HMRC will not advise of unpaid tax via text and certainly won’t take payment with gift cards over the phone. If you are suspicious of any phone call, please hang up immediately. Don’t fall victim to these despicable people.”
Fraudulent calls can be reported to the police by calling 101 or going to the Action Fraud website – https://actionfraud.police.uk/
