Division Two: Dunfermline Carnegie 3, Inverleith 1

Evergreen Calum Wood showed his undoubted class as he masterminded Dunfermline Carnegie’s confidence-boosting 3-1 victory over one of their expected promotion rivals.

The former Scotland international dictated play in midfield as the Fife club got their Division Two campaign off to a flying start with a 3-1 win over Inverleith.

Davyn Keuter netted a double and Ian Bruce the other strike in the success at Woodmill High School.

South African-born Keuter, a former Edinburgh University player, caught the visitors cold in two minutes with a low drive into the net following his club’s first penalty corner.

Inverleith coach Chris Duncan said it was a wake-up call to his men but it was Dunfermline who carved out more of the chances in the rest of the session.

The scoreline stayed the same until the break with ice cool Wood spreading telling passes around the rain-soaked and slippery pitch.

And the home side scored again from Keuter six minutes into the second period, also from a set-piece.

Inverleith clawed their way back with a goal from Niall Tennant 13 minutes later following a flowing move down the right.

But Bruce’s strike, following a move started deep inside Inverleith’s half three minutes later, ended the comeback.

Inverleith did have chances before the final whistle but failed to take them and coach Duncan said that his men did not show their full potential.
