Edinburgh retail destination Fort Kinnaird has installed a dispenser offering complimentary sanitary products in an effort to support those who experience period poverty.
Shoppers in need are invited to take a free product from the machine, which is located in the women’s bathroom facilities at the Fort Kinnaird customer service centre.
With over 14 million visits per year, Fort Kinnaird joins iconic Edinburgh landmarks such as the Scottish Parliament in offering free sanitary protection to patrons. The move follows the Scottish Government’s recently-announced initiative to provide free products in Edinburgh schools, colleges, and universities.
Fort Kinnaird Deputy Centre Manager Lindy Watson said: “Fort Kinnaird is proud to offer free sanitary products to women in need. No woman or girl should have to suffer the indignity of being unable to afford sanitary protection.
“Fort Kinnaird is one of Edinburgh’s busiest retail and leisure destinations, and it is our responsibility to make sure all visitors have a comfortable and respectful experience.”
On a visit to Fort Kinnaird on to see the machine in place, Cllr Lesley Cameron Vice-Convener of Housing and Economy at the City of Edinburgh Council said: “I’m delighted that Fort Kinnaird has taken this very welcome initiative to offer free sanitary products to women in need.
“I would encourage other Edinburgh landmarks to take Fort Kinnaird’s lead in supporting the many women and girls who find themselves affected by from period poverty.”
