Grange recovered from an opening day defeat to claim pole position in Pool A of the EuroHockey Club Trophy in Vienna, Austria thanks to a last-gasp goal from Dominic Wild.

He scored from a penalty corner with four minutes left of a tense final qualifying game to edge HC Minsk from Belarus 3-2.

And the Scottish Cup and Division One title-holders moved to the top of the four-strong group on a goal difference of plus four against Minsk’s plus two.

SC Stroitel Brest, also from Belarus, finished third on 11 points after beating Polish side Poznan 4-3 in their final qualifier, but they had a goal difference of zero.

Michael McKenzie broke the deadlock after 16 minutes from a penalty corner routine.

And it took the Belarus side until the 43rd minute to level through Tsimur Tsimashkou also from a penalty corner.

Grange forced ahead when Luke Cranney scored from open play three minutes later but the Belarus side refused to give in.

Aliaksandr Hancharou scored a field goal seven minutes later to set up a tense , but Wild took centre stage with his set-piece counter to take David Knipe’s team to the top of the group.
