Speedway – Harris desperate to get on track

Chris Harris has admitted he’s desperate to get his season going against Berwick Bandits in the Championship Shield at Ashfield on Friday (tapes-up 7.30pm) after having his Glasgow debut put off four times.

The 35-year-old missed the opener against Edinburgh due to the birth of his daughter Amara-Mae at the end of March.

He had been due to take his bow in the red and white the following week in Armadale but it was rained off.

Then two meetings against Workington also succumbed to the weather at the weekend.

The former Grand Prix star says he hasn’t known a start to a season quite like it with dozens of fixtures across the country suffering.

And, while some extra time with the family has been nice, he’s spent hours in the workshop in anticipation of going racing.

He said: “It’s been frustrating. But there’s no point in trying to run a meeting with bad weather, it affects the crowds and the racing.

“I’ve never had a start to a season like this – it’s a new one for me. I’m just having to take every day as it comes.

“It has been nice in a way because I’ve been able to spend more time with the family.

“But my focus is still there and I’m good to go. I’ve kept tinkering in the workshop the odd day here and there to keep myself busy.”
