Asian Art at Bonhams this Wednesday
This week at Bonhams it is all about the Asian Art which they are about to sell on Wednesday.
We met Ian Glennie who is the specialist in this area who was keen to tell us about one piece in particular which has taken his eye.
He told us : “It is a beautiful carving in elephant ivory of a pomegranate fruit hanging on a bough with some other fruits nearby. It is bursting open and the seeds are coming forth from the inside. It is very representative of marital fertility and abundance, the giving forth of children, usually boys in Chinese symbolism.
“It came from a local lady who I think was offered the choice of a number of artefacts from a deceased friend’s home. She decided she didn’t want oil paintings and the like and had admired this beautiful pomegranate for many years.
“It dates from the turn of the century about 1900 and we expect it to make a few thousand at this Wednesday’s sale.”
