Fundraiser to celebrate new arrivals to Edinburgh at St Mary’s Cathedral
The unique contributions of Edinburgh’s refugee and migrant communities will be celebrated in an exciting evening of music, art and discussion this St Andrews Day. The fundraising event – Nov 29 7.30-9 pm – will be co-hosted by Edinburgh-based charity The Welcoming and St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, with performances from The Welcoming Choir and a number of special guests.
Set against the grand surroundings of St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, the evening will feature a special performance from The Welcoming Choir, a panel discussion on life as a ‘new Scot’ and a never before seen photography exhibition featuring images from newly welcomed Edinburgh citizens.
The fundraiser will also see musical contributions from ex-Bhundu Boy Rise Kagona and the Chilean peace activist Carlos Arredondo. Along with the performances, the evening will include a raffle and a range of refreshments, including Syrian sweets and savoury snacks.
Andrew Dickie, organiser of the Welcoming Choir commented: “We are incredibly fortunate to have a growing community of inspiring new Scots in Edinburgh. Our fundraiser not only provides the perfect platform for new Scots to showcase their talents, it also gives everyone who has reserved a ticket the opportunity to celebrate their contributions and learn from their experiences as newcomers to Edinburgh. Join us on Wednesday 29 November 2017 and be a part of the celebrations.”
To reserve a space, visit the Eventbrite page or pay on the door. The event works on a pay what you can basis, with a standard ticket priced at £10, concessions (eg student, unemployed, OAP) costing £5, £1 for Welcoming participants and under 18s go free.
All donations are welcome.
