Field hockey – Grange out to extend winning run
Title-chasing Grange entertain newly-promoted Dundee Wanderers on Saturday (Fettes College, 14.00) looking to maintain their unblemished Division One record so far.
The Edinburgh side have not been firing on all cylinders but coach David Knipe’s men have nine points from three fixtures.
They are second to early pace-setters, Western Wildcats, on goal difference. Wanderers are seventh with three points thanks to a shutout success over Hillhead earlier in their campaign.
It’s a match Knipe can’t afford to lose as Western Wildcats play bottom club Inverleith (Auchenhowie, 13.30) who have still to register a point after three games.
They have shipped 20 goals and scored eight since earning promotion and lost 7-2 last Saturday at Uddingston.
Stuart Neave, Inverleith’s coach, said they were obviously disappointed to lose and added: “On a positive note we did create a number of very good chances to score.
“Western have had a good start to the season and as we are aware, having played them pre-season, they are a young, talented side.
“From our perspective we need to continue creating the same opportunities we have enjoyed in previous games,
“However, we must up our convertion rate and, at the same time, limit their goal threats.”
Sixth-placed Edinburgh University visit the Dundee International Sports Centre (DISC, 16.15) to face Grove Menzieshill who are fourth.
The students lost 2-1 at home to Clydesdale last weekend and coach Graham Moodie is looking for a reaction from his young side.
The only other fixture in men’s Division One sees Clydesdale in action against Uddingston (Titwood, 16.30).
In women’s Division One, leaders Edinburgh University visit sixth-placed Grove Menzieshill (DISC, 14.30) determined to extend their three-game winning run in the feature game on the card.
Dundee Wanderers entertain Grange (15.30) and Watsonians are at home to Western Wildcats (16.00).
