Boxing – McGregor now in paid ranks

Edinburgh-born Lee McGregor has teamed up with former world champion Barry McGuigan

Amateur star Lee McGregor will make his professional boxing debut on the undercard of Josh Taylor’s key fight with former world title holder Miguel Vazquez.

The highly-talented boxer from the Saughton area of Edinburgh has joined the paid ranks with Barry McGuigan’s Cyclone Promotions.

And the 20-year-old will now be based in at McGuigan’s London gym.

Barry’s son Shane will take the young Scot, who has recovered from hand surgery, under his wing.

And McGregor will train alongside WBA world super middleweight champion George Groves and WBC silver super lightweight champion Josh Taylor from East Lothian.

McGuigan believes he had seen the birth of a future star and the Hall of Famer said: “I heard there was a very good kid coming through (the amateur ranks) that was doing great things.

”I love Lee’s attacking style and the fact that he attacks with intelligence and I believe Lee can become a world champion.

“What excites me about him is that Lee is 5ft 8in tall, loves to learn and can go up through the weight divisions.”

Taylor headlines the event at the Royal Highland Centre and steps onto the world stage.

Facing Mexico’s former long-reigning IBF world lightweight champion Vazquez is the Scot’s biggest test to date as a professional.

The bill also sees Edinburgh’s undefeated IBO Inter-Continental super lightweight champion Jason Easton defend his belt against unbeaten Czech champion Josef Zahradnik.

Undefeated stablemate Martin Bakole boxes in his first title fight against Belgium’s undefeated Ali Baghouz with the vacant IBO Continental heavyweight championship up for grabs.

And unbeaten prospect Chantelle Cameron continues her rapid rise when she squares up to Mexico’s Edith Ramos for the vacant IBO Inter-Continental super featherweight title in her fourth contest as a professional.
