Speedway – Dickson lays down gauntlet

Stewart Dickson believes Glasgow owe it to their fans to show some steel against Sheffield Tigers on Tuesday at Ashfield despite facing a huge task to make the SGB Championship play-off final.

The Ashfield side are 59-31 behind after their semi-final, first-leg defeat on Thursday night in Yorkshire.

James Sarjeant, who scored ten points from seven rides at Owlerton, has been called in as a guest at No 6 and either Jack Smith, if he is fit, or Alfie Bowtell will ride at No 7.

Finnish star Nike Lunna is still out injured and Glasgow will use rider replacement and hope that Dan Bewley continues the form he showed in winning the National League Riders’ Championship at the weekend.

Dickson admits it’s a tough ask to turn over the league’s top side but said: “We are all together as a team but I need to see signs that the riders want it as much as I want it and the owners want it.

“It’s not quite done yet and, until it’s mathematically impossible, we’re going to have to give it a go. We owe it to our supporters.”

Ipswich Witches, who beat Edinburgh Monarchs, await the winners. Tapes go up at 7.30pm.
