The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra will be making its debut at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival later today at the city’s Usher Hall.
The orchestra will perform a varied and deeply personal programme of Bernstein’s ‘On the Waterfront’ Suite, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 and Copland’s ‘Lincoln Portrait’, narrated by a celebrity guest speaker (to be confirmed). The CSO premiered the Lincoln Portrait in 1942 and it continues to be a powerful and evocative piece of music in 2017.
This will be the first major European tour led by Music Director Louis Langrée, who has been with the CSO since the 2013/14 season. The orchestra is known for its championing of American music and new commissions, having released the CD ‘Concertos for Orchestra’ in 2016 featuring new works by living contemporary composers.
Louis has enjoyed an illustrious career working with orchestras including the LSO, Berlin Philharmoniker, London Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and the Hallé. He was appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2006 and Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur in 2014.
