Ice hockey – Lynch lands national role

Steven Lynch (grey suit) is now part of the Great Britain coaching team

Former Edinburgh Capitals forward Steven Lynch has been confirmed as the new head coach for the Great Britain (GB) under-16 squad.

The Kirkcaldy-born, 40-year-old also played for Fife, Dumfries, Ayr and Paisley, and represented GB at under-20 and under-18 level.

Lynch currently heads Scottish ice hockey’s national coaching programme and was appointed head coach of Scottish Ice Hockey (SIH) last year.

He said: “I am relishing the challenge of working with and developing the most promising junior players in the country and to prepare them for what hopefully will become long international careers.

“Having spent the last three years working with SIH and their national programme, I felt that the time was right to test myself at the next level of junior hockey while continuing to further my own education as a coach.”

Tony Hand, Ice Hockey UK’s national development head coach, said: “Steven is an excellent coach and is well-regarded in Scotland and across UK ice hockey.

“He has a passion to develop young players and so is a perfect fit for the role of GB Under-16s head coach.
