Field hockey – students go unbeaten in Europe
Edinburgh University women completed their EuroHockey Challenge 2 unbeaten but they were taken to a shootout by Austrian side SV Arminen in their final game.
Alison Eadie, who had netted the students opener in 56 minutes from a penalty corner, converted along with Sophie Newton and Sophie Maunder.
Joanna Wieloch had converted the Austrian side’s leveller also from a penalty corner four minutes after the Scots scored.
Edinburgh had earlier topped qualifying Pool B with three straight wins.
Sam Judge’s side thrashed Navex AHTC Wien (Austria) 5-0 then beat French cracks Iris Hockey Lambersart 4-1 before hammering Welsh combine Whitchurch Saints 7-0 to collect 15 points with a goal difference of plus 15.
Arminen were second in Pool A with 11 points from two wins and a defeat but they pushed the Scots hard.
Elsewhere, Grove Menzieshill women had a disappointing tournament in the EuroClub Trophy in Munich finishing seventh.
That was thanks to a 3-2 win over Italian side SG Amsicora ASD in their final game.
And the Dundee club’s men finished fourth after losing 4-0 to hosts Dinamo Elektrostal in Russia in the EuroHockey Club Trophy.
