Division One: Edinburgh University 1, Watsonians 2

Guy Rowson netted the game-winner two minutes from time to hand Watsonians a narrow win over Edinburgh University in a crucial Division One clash at Peffermill.

He slammed the ball past Scottish international goalkeeper David Forrester from an almost impossible angle after a flowing move.

And it moves coach Mike Leonard’s team, who lead the league earlier this season, into fifth place in the ten-strong division.

They have 17 points from 14 fixtures while the students, who have struggled through injury since the winter closedown, slip to sixth with 15 points from 14 starts.

Roddy Gray broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second-half and Jack Henderson levelled after 55 minutes as the students upped the pace.

Rowson’s goal, coupled with a tremendous save by goalkeeper Luke Campbell from a late penalty corner, secured Watsonians their fifth win of the league season.

Coach Leonard, a former Scotland captain, said: “The boys played well and worked hard and took our chances.

“Now we have to do it all again on Sunday when we play Western Wildcats in another vital game for us.”
