EDINBURGH University men can take a major step towards promotion to the top tier of British student hockey on Wednesday.

They play Leeds Beckett University at Peffermill (push off 4pm) in their last match of the British Universities and Colleges League (BUCS), Northern Premier B Division.

And a win will secure the league title and a play-off to break into the top division, BUCS Premier A Division.

Currently, Edinburgh, who are also third in men’s domestic Division One in Scotland, have 16 points from nine games, having won four and drawn four and lost one.

Leeds Beckett are fourth with ten points from eight games. They have won three, drawn one and lost four.

Graham Moodie, Edinburgh’s coach, said: “If we win on Wednesday we win the league.

“One team, Leeds University, can catch us on points but we have a better head-to-head record against them.”

Edinburgh drew 2-2 at Lees Beckett two weeks ago with a weakened team and Moodie said: “It was a good point in the end.

“We know if we play to our potential we will give ourselves every chance of winning on Wednesday.

“Winning the league will put us into a play-off to get promoted to BUCS Premier A.”
