A double-bill of operas by Puccini opens the season on Wednesday 30 November, with each performance lasting just under an hour. The operas featured are Il Tabarro (The Cloak) and Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica).

The former is a dark and compelling thriller which reveals the tragic consequences that happen when a man discovers his wife is having an affair. The latter, Puccini’s favourite of his works, is the tale of a young woman forced to hide in a convent with her illegitimate child in order to preserve her family’s reputation.

To conclude Opera North’s hidden truths, there will be a brand new performance of Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd, which returns to the opera house after 20 year absence. An aging captain in the navy reflects on events he has kept hidden for most of his life, centering around an officer named Billy Budd.

Opera North’s Season of Secrets comes to Festival Theatre Edinburgh from 30 November – 3 December 2016.
