Big Hearts to Collect For Christmas Foodbank This Saturday
With the rampant commercial festival that has become Christmas now screaming at people to buy this, that and the other, it’s worth pausing for breath for a moment to consider this alarming fact. Every day many people in this country go hungry because they can’t afford to buy enough food to feed themselves. People on low income or facing financial difficulty because they’ve been made redundant or had an unexpected bill are struggling to satisfy a basic human need – food.
A sad sign of the difficult times we live in is the establishment of foodbanks across the UK. However, they provide a valuable service to those in need by collecting non-perishable, in-date food donated by the public and then sorted into boxes to be given to people in need.
thAhead of the Hearts v Motherwell game in the Ladbrokes Premiership, an army of Big Hearts volunteers will be out collecting donations of food for an extremely worthwhile cause.
Most wanted items include: tinned meals, tins of fruit, tins of vegetables, pasta and pasta sauces, tinned soup, toiletries and other long shelf life products.
No one should go starving in what is supposed to be a civilised society. If you can spare some of the above items – even if it’s just a tin of soup – please head along to Gorgie Road early on Saturday afternoon. Even a small contribution can make a huge difference to someone in need.
