Five things you need to know today
- Council meeting
- Help find a home for the Portobello Mural
- Council consultation
- Royal Scottish Country Dance Society
- Doors Open Day – another suggestion for you
The council meets in full session today. Not much on the agenda but the papers are here.
City Centre councillor Jo Mowat has asked a question about weed spraying as to which areas have been treated with weedkiller and when.
Councillor Burgess has asked about vehicles in the quadrangle. “What are the expectations about permitted vehicle access to the city chambers quadrangle and how is that monitored and implemented in practice?”
Most of the discussion is likely to be about matters included in the Leader’s Report which you can read here:
This is the mural at Portobello High School which is about to be lost forever unless someone does something about it! They have no room at the new school to hang it. Could you help? Do you have a home or office which is big enough to take the 40 feet long artwork?
The City of Edinburgh Council is consulting on the Open Space Strategy 2021.
They are asking for your views on the way forward for different types of green space across the city and Councillor Lunn is anxious that you take this opportunity to get involved. Click here.

Later today members of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society are heading to Catalonia with musicians and dancers in their midst!
They will attend the Jornades Internacionals Folkloriques de Catalunya (JIF) which is one of the largest folk dance festivals in Europe.
The Lord Provost who is Honorary President of the society has sent cordial greetings with the team to everyone taking part in the JIF. David Watson Chairman of the society added that he wishes the team ‘the best of luck and is delighted that we will represent the best of Scottish culture’.
Doors Open Day is a bit of a misnomer. The doors of certain buildings around the city will be open on both Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September. The events are organised by the Cockburn Association (Edinburgh’s Civic Trust) since 1991.
Admission to all buildings is free, and there are too many of them for you to see in one weekend!
One building is offering more than just a tour round its many rooms. Bonhams at 22 Queen Street are also offering free valuations of your treasures. (a small donation is expected for CHAS)
“For the first time, Bonhams Scotland will open its doors to give visitor s the oppor tunity to experience life behind-the- scenes at an international auction house, occupying all five floors of the original New Town house visitors will not only see the wonderful architecture but also a varied collection of art, antiques, jewellery and more. This will be an opportunity to learn the ‘ins and outs’ of the world of fine art and antiques.
Throughout the weekend there will be activities, competitions, talks, demonstrations and even the chance to have go at auctioneering. We will also be holding valuations for any items you would like to bring along – for a small donation you will be able to meet with one of our specialists and all the funds raised will go to the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.
