Artist Tommy Fitchet has 100 small glass paintings on display at his gallery Saorsa on Deanhaugh Street in Stockbridge. They are all for sale, and half of the proceeds will be donated to Cancer Research UK.

The artist proposes that the other half will be used to buy new materials, and so will be invested in a sustainable ongoing programme.

Tommy paints on glass, and his paintings are mainly landscapes. He started painting when he lived in Glasgow in a council flat which was so damp he decided to paint on the walls. He simply could not afford canvases, so he collected discarded drinks cans which he washed, fashioned into squares and embossed small designs on them before sticking them onto cards. A shop in the West End loved them and put in an order for 500. That allowed him to buy some art materials and experiment with new techniques.

Now Tommy is a successful artist and gallery owner and spends his time painting on glass in a style he has made his own. Initially he created these exclusively for a gallery in Arran, but now he has sold his individual paintings all over the world.

In the new charity initiative 100 for 100 there are 100 paintings for sale. The Edinburgh Reporter spoke to Tommy ahead of the opening tonight:
