Edinburgh International Film Festival 2016 Mother (Ema) ***

Mother (Tiina Malberg) feverishly keeps house for her unprepossessing husband and cares for their comatose son, meeting all of his most personal care needs.  

But why does he still get so many regular visitors a year after the shooting which incapacitated him?  And who shot him in the first place?

While Kadri Kousaar’s Estonian tragi-comedy, subtitled in English, is as black as night it has some surprisingly light moments and, as you might expect, the denouement is rather thought-provoking and shocking.
