Changes to Edinburgh trains
- Evening peak train extended to Glasgow Central
- New Sunday morning service between Edinburgh – North Berwick
- New departure times between Edinburgh – North Berwick / Dunbar
- Changes to station ‘calls’ between Edinburgh – Helensburgh / Milngavie /Glasgow Central
Changes to ScotRail’s timetable from 8 August will see the introduction of a new Sunday morning service between Edinburgh and North Berwick, and an extra evening peak train to Glasgow Central.
From Sunday 14 August, a train will leave Edinburgh at 09:33, arriving at North Berwick at 10:06. In the opposite direction, a new service will depart North Berwick at 10:24, reaching Edinburgh at 10:59.
Services between Edinburgh – North Berwick / Dunbar will also be retimed by up to 15 minutes, with some trains leaving earlier than normal.
Edinburgh customers will also benefit from an additional evening peak train to Glasgow Central as the existing 17:22 Edinburgh to Motherwell service will be extended to Glasgow Central.
It will follow a diverted route and call additionally at Bellshill and Uddingston, meaning it will no longer stop at Motherwell. Passengers who normally travel to Motherwell on this service should go for the 17:39 service instead, which arrives in to Motherwell station at 18:34.
When Queen Street High Level tunnel re-opens on 8 August, times for Edinburgh – Helensburgh / Milngavie services will broadly remain the same as they are just now. However, there will be some changes to the station ‘calls’ on these routes.
During the tunnel works, almost every train on the Edinburgh – Helensburgh / Milngavie route has been running with six carriages to accommodate additional passengers switching from the line via Falkirk High. However, when the tunnel re-opens, six trains will be taken out of service for refurbishment, resulting in carriages being moved around to best suit customer demand.
There will also be some changes to station ‘calls’ on two evening peak trains from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts. The 17:48 Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts service will no longer call at Slateford and Kingsknowe, but will stop additionally at Curriehill and Kirknewton. Instead, the 17:56 service will call at Slateford and Kingsknowe, but will not stop at Curriehill and Kirknewton.
A ScotRail Alliance spokeswoman said: “We’re delighted to introduce an earlier service to and from North Berwick, and offer an additional evening train to Glasgow Central in response to customer feedback.
“Some departure times are changing on services between Edinburgh and North Berwick / Dunbar from 8 August to accommodate other trains on the east coast mainline, with some earlier departures.”
She added: “We’re keeping the best bits of the Queen Street tunnel timetable as customer feedback has been positive, and we’ve been able to provide a much more reliable service.
“Nevertheless, we’re encouraging all customers to check their journeys online or via the ScotRail app, selecting a date from 8 August.”
