Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault and robbery in Princes Street which happened around 2.15am on Sunday morning.

A 32-year-old man was walking on the garden side of Princes Street, towards the west end, when he was approached by a male suspect at a bus stop.

The suspect grabbed hold of the victim and stole his wallet, before making off towards South St Andrews Street.

He is described as white, around 20 to 30-years-old, around 5ft 6in, clean-shaven, with a slim build and dark short hair.

He was wearing a dark waist length jacket with a full length zip, jeans and black headphones.

Detective Constable Iain Wallace, of Gayfield Police Station, said: “I’m asking anyone who saw something unusual at the bus stop between the Balmoral Hotel and Waverley Bridge around that time to get in touch.

“The victim walks with a noticeable slouch, so this might jog the memory of anyone who passed by.

“It was a frightening and unprovoked attack and we’re eager to catch the person responsible.”

Those with any information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
