At the Meadows a new mural has been put in place on the wall of the Scottish Power substation that faces on to the Meadows at the intersection of Middle Meadow Walk and North Meadow Walk.. The work was commissioned by Friends of the Meadows & Bruntsfield Links. The artist is Astrid Jaekel, who worked in collaboration with the poet Rachel Woolf to compose a fascinating interweaving of text and pictures over five large boards, covering most of the walls facing east and south of the Scottish Power building.
For the first board Rachel has used an extract from Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie describing a walk over the Meadows of children with their teacher, Miss Brodie. Rachel then composed her own words to describe ‘A Throng of Folk’ on the Meadows, which Astrid interweaves with a series of brilliant illustrations over the next three boards. Finally a poem by Robert Burns ends the sequence, again accompanied by Astrid’s imaginative interpretations. The whole set illustrates a procession and a celebration.

Frontline Typhoon and Tornado GR4s from RAF Leuchars in Fife and RAF Lossiemouth in Moray are saluting the crowds at Edinburgh Castle this August and tonight the aircraft will be a Typhoon.
Flying at 1,000 feet, the aircraft will travel east to west along the Royal Mile and over the castle esplanade. In addition and for one night only, one of the world’s premier aerobatic display teams, the Red Arrows, will make a special appearance on August 9th.
Air Officer Scotland and Station Commander RAF Leuchars, Air Commodore Gerry Mayhew said:
“The Royal Air Force is delighted and honoured to be able to participate in this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The Tattoo never fails to attract an international audience and we welcome the opportunity to showcase the United Kingdom’s impressive air power capability. Our ever-vigilant Typhoon Force is on high alert every minute of every day to defend the United Kingdom’s airspace and that of our NATO allies, while our Tornados provide critical intelligence gathering and air support to operations around the globe. None of these vital tasks could be achieved without the dedication and skill of our people.”
