Theresa Riggi, 49 killed her eight-year-old twins Augustino and Gianluca and five-year-old daughter Cecilia at a flat in Edinburgh’s Slateford Road in August 2010.

She was originally charged with murder but the Crown accepted a plea of culpable homicide due to diminished responsibility.

At the trial, Lord Bracadale said that the killings were a “devastating family tragedy” and sentenced the American to 16 years imprisonment.

The trial heard that Riggi suffered from narcissistic, paranoid and hysterical personality disorders.

After a number of alleged attacks she was moved to Rampton from the all-female Cornton Vale Prison, near Stirling.
