Canongate assault suspect released from custody

A 25 year old man who was charged with a serious sexual assault has been released from custody pending further investigations without appearing in court, the Crown Office revealed yesterday.

The man was due to have appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court after being arrested at the weekend in connection with an attack on a 21 year old woman during the early hours of New Year’s Day in the Canongate.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “The Procurator Fiscal at Edinburgh received a report concerning a 25-year-old male in connection with an alleged incident on January 1 2014.

“After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the report, the accused was liberated from custody pending further investigation and did not appear in court.”
